Do You Like You?

I am a HUGE Colbie Caillat fan. I have been since I first heard Bubbly on the radio. She is one of the few artists that I actually follow. I keep track of her tour schedule so I can get tickets when she is in my neck of the woods and I have alerts set up to let me know when she releases anything new. She has always been someone who has come across as being very comfortable in her own skin, she is very natural and seems pretty down to earth. I love the story-telling that goes into her music, I feel like she reveals pieces of her soul through her music, which I love. It allows me to identify with her, to connect with her experiences and emotions. It makes her real, tangible, human.

As I mentioned, I have alerts set up to inform me of any new stuff she releases. Recently I was alerted that her new EP, Gypsy Heart was released. Naturally, I purchased it right away before even listening to it…because it is Colbie Caillat… so there is really no need to try it on, its is going to fit!

As soon as it was finished downloading I hunkered down and gave it a listen. I was soon lost in the music as I tapped away on my computer trying to get caught up on this and that. Then track number four started, by the time that song was over I had tears rolling down my cheeks. I started the track over again and listened to it on repeat for half an hour. The song was beautiful, and heartbreaking, and encouraging and just plain amazing. I did a search for the music video because after hearing the song, there HAS to be a music video… and there was. The song itself has a huge impact but hearing the song while watching the video took my breath away.

I might have jumped up and shouted “AMEN” when it was over.

Colbie has recently done several interviews where she has talked about her inspiration for the song and video. She reveals her own struggle with pleasing everyone while holding on to herself and encourages women to find their true selves, embrace that and be happy.

“It’s so true that you can go so far down the rabbit hole of altering yourself to where you’re not happy anymore…Trying to live up to other people’s expectations. When we do get dolled up, we get more compliments. It’s just what happens. When you have a cute outfit on and your makeup looks amazing, the first thing people comment on is your image. When you don’t wear makeup, you hear things like, “Oh wow, you look tired or you’re so brave for not wearing makeup!”

In another interview with Glamour, Colbie shares why the song means so much to her personally.

“The song was from experience. I do try very hard. I think all girls — especially in this business — have to be polished, and if you don’t, then you’re the one who looks bad. It’s a lot of pressure.”

” … Little by little I’m trying to remind myself and other people. I don’t want to sound like I’m preaching to people, because I’m not doing that, but it’s reminders for us all (that you don’t have to try).”

The song is called “Try” and you really must listen to it! The video can not be missed. After you have absorbed the awesomeness, please join me in giving a huge shout out to the always awesome and now even more awesome Colbie Caillat! Thank you for being a strong and empowering voice with a message that is so important for us as women to really hear and let sink in!

So, now it is time to go somewhere quiet, turn your volume up and truly let the message sink in, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!

Please share this with every woman and girl you know!
